Maria is the granddaughter of Professor Gerald Robotnik and cousin of Dr. Eggman, and caretaker/mother/sister figure of Shadow the Hedgehog. She also suffered from the illness called NIDS, or Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which was, at that time, considered incurable. Gerald’s project to create an immortal being turned into trying to save his granddaughter, and he called it “Project Shadow”. Tests were used on poor little mice the Biolizard. These tests caused the Biolizard to be put on life support, so, of course, he couldn’t use them on Maria as well.
Later, Shadow was created, and he and Maria quickly grew close. They were always together and talking, usually about Earth and the people there, or about Shadow himself. While Maria cared about all of the crew that resided on Space Craft ARK, she cared the most about Shadow, supporting him and listening to him when he needed it. She pictured him as the protector of ARK, and always hoped he’d bring hope for the humans on earth.
When a robot that was researched by Gerald went mad and destroyed large portions of the ARK, the president halted any and all experiments, and sent GUN (basically a… swat team, I guess.) up to raid the ARK to destroy the experiments due to suspicions of just what Gerald was doing. Maria and Shadow tried to escape, and she even succeeded in sealing him in an escape pod. Before she could do anything, though, she was shot by one of GUN’s members who was aiming for Shadow. Before she ejected the capsule, she told Shadow this…
“Shadow, I beg of you, please do it for me... For a better future. For all the people who live on that planet. Give them a chance to be happy. Let them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason you were brought into this world."
And on her dying breath, she ejected the capsule, sending Shadow to earth. That experience would scar Shadow forever.
Maria will appear in Avoria right after she dies, so, she comes from the Sonic Adventure 2 game. She’s very kind, calm and gentle, though at times, she can prove to be childish and playful. She’s still pretty mature for her age. She feels pity even for the lowest and meanest of beings, even feeling bad for monsters. She’s dreamy and hopeful as well, always staring at Earth from a window on the ARK and wondering what it’d be like to live there.
And that’s pretty much all the games had to offer on her. But anyway, she has NIDS, so she’ll get exhausted or sickly easily and probably won’t be able to concentrate on things very well, hence her dreamy state. This won’t be changed in Avoria, though perhaps someone who’s from the future there could give her medicine? Basically… the effects of Avoria, with the power sapping thing, won’t happen to her. She’s a normal human being, only with an illness.
